Abstract
This workshop will cover principles and practice for understanding and linking a wide range of datasets with a particular focus on linking to census data. The workshop will be delivered by staff from two ESRC-funded projects, Geo-Refer and GeoConvert. The morning session will cover geographical referencing principles, an introduction to the Geo-Refer online training and reference resources and an overview the National Statistics Postcode Directory and the GeoConvert tool.
The afternoon will provide a hands-on practical session where delegates can experiment with linking geographical datasets, supported by experts from the two project teams. Delegates will be able to bring their own data or work with demonstrator datasets. The workshop is addressed to the needs of a broad range of social science users and does not assume any prior experience with geographical information systems (GIS) or other specialist software. It will be particularly attractive to those whose work involves (for example) the manipulation and analysis of census, postcodes, deprivation and health datasets.
